Midnight at 1300°C: What It Really Means to Guard a Phoenix Kiln

The other night, I stood in front of the kiln again.
It was completely dark, the only light coming from the fire inside. Thick black smoke kept pouring out, rising straight into the night sky.
My clothes smelled like wood smoke, my eyes were tired, but I couldn't leave.
Because that's what guarding a Phoenix
Wood-Fired Kiln means - you stay with the fire until it tells you it's done.
People often ask me, "Isn't it too hard?" Yeah, it is. You add wood, watch the flame, adjust the air, wait, check the temperature, and wait some more. Sometimes after a whole night of hard work, you open the kiln and only a few pieces come out beautiful.
The rest... well, they become lessons.
But that's exactly why I love it.
Every piece that survives carries the memory of that night - the 1300°C fire, the smoke, the patience, and the uncertainty. No two pieces are ever exactly the same. That's the soul of real Phoenix Kiln work.
Here's a short clip from one of those nights:

When I watch the smoke rise like that, I always think: this is what real craftsmanship looks like. It's not perfect, it's not fast, but it's honest.
If you've ever held one of our Phoenix Kiln cups or bowls, now you know a little bit of the story behind it. Every time you drink tea from it, you're drinking a piece of that night's fire.
Would you like to bring some of that soul home? Come take a look at the collection.
